AEW Winter is Coming (2021) Preview

Updated: Jan 14, 2022

Last year at AEW Winter is Coming, we saw the debut of Sting! This time around, there are a few WWE/NXT contracts expiring that have the internet abuzz. I'll start off by saying, I don't think either Kyle O'Reilly or Johnny Gargano are showing up to Winter Is Coming. I do know that the card is stellar and I think we could see a few other AEW debuts.

At this time, FTR does not have a match on the show. Saturday at ROH'S Final Battle, FTR attacked the Briscoe Brothers after Jay and Mark secured the ROH Tag Team Championship for a record 12th time. This is a dream match that people want to see and since having the match in ROH is not an option, AEW is the only destination that makes sense. At the risk of sounding like a Fantasy Booker, I think the match will take place at Battle of the Belts. I would not be surprised in the slightest if we see Jay and Mark Briscoe debut in AEW on Wednesday to continue their feud.

MJF vs. Dante Martin - Dynamite Diamond Ring

MJF currently finds himself in the hottest feud in wrestling against CM Punk. This Wednesday, MJF attempts to win the Dynamite Diamond Ring for the third straight year against Dante Martin. Dante has had a great 2021 in AEW, but I see MJF winning here as we've got to make MJF look strong for when he takes on and ends the undefeated streak of CM Punk. Winner: MJF

Wardlow vs Matt Sydal

This started in the battle royal on 12/10. There really is not much build, but I doubt there will be much of a match either. I love Matt Sydal, but Wardlow might murder him here. At the very least, Wardlow beats Sydal convincingly. Winner: Wardlow

Serena Deeb vs. Hikaru Shida

I struggle with predicting this match. These two are two of the top women in AEW. Both have had such a profound impact on the division. Serena's entire career has been revitalized as she has proven to everyone how important she is to women's wrestling in general. The way the feud has been built up between the two, the smart money would be on Shida. I would even go further in saying that it seems like on major Dynamites or even just major shows, AEW likes to give Shida a win. I'd expect the same here. Winner: Hikaru Shida

"Hangman" Adam Page (c) vs. "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson - AEW World Title Match

The main event is one of the biggest matches in Dynamite history. Hangman won the championship from Kenny Omega at Full Gear, the same pay-per-view that Danielson won the World Title Eliminator Tournament to earn this very title match. Danielson has done a great job in his role of ripping through each of the Dark Order members. It isn't that I can't see Danielson winning the title this early into his run because I definitely can. I can't see Hangman losing the title this early into his run. That's reasoning enough for me to think Hangman wins. Winner: Hangman Adam Page

While we only have a handful of matches announced right now, I believe the main event will definitely deliver in a big way. I'm hoping that the match doesn't go too long, but I'm confident that Hangman and Danielson can put on a solid 20-minute match. I hope that people have not set unrealistic expectations of surprises since last year's show contained one of the biggest in AEW history. I am looking forward to Winter is Coming and I hope you are too!
